Moccasin Identifier Project Builds Understanding of Our Role as Treaty People

Students and staff at Bluevale Collegiate Institute (BCI) participated in a meaningful learning experience with Indigenous educators from the Moccasin Identifier Project, exploring Treaty relationships, First Nations histories, reconciliation, and shared responsibility. Through storytelling, discussion, and hands-on activities, students learned that treaties are living commitments that continue to shape relationships today, while the moccasin serves as a symbol of identity, resilience, and connection to the land. Educators emphasized that reconciliation is rooted in awareness, relationship-building, empathy, and action, encouraging students to reflect on stewardship, reciprocity, belonging, and the impact of disrupted communities. The experience culminated in a student-created art installation and a gift exchange with the Moccasin Identifier team, reinforcing the importance of gratitude, intercultural understanding, and working together toward a stronger, more connected community.
